"Climate change is the greatest challenge that human civilisation has ever faced. Within our Energy Studies and Renewable Energy Engineering programs at Murdoch, we have a motto of “Be Part of the Solution” and we teach our students strategies to combat climate change. I am inspired by the thought of a network of our multi-skilled graduates from our programs, working all over the world to tackle the issue of climate change head on."

Dr. Whale has worked in the area of renewable energy in the UK, USA and Australia over the last 18 years including periods working on projects with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE).

He is currently Director of the National Small Wind Turbine Centre at RISE and has research interests in the area of small wind turbines, sustainable development and energy efficiency. He has authored /co-authored a total of 22 publications together with 20 commercial-in-confidence reports.
