Clinical Laboratory Science

Clinical Laboratory Science is concerned with the application of medical technologies to testing of clinical specimens and provides an excellent foundation for a career in medical diagnosis, medical research or other health-related fields. This major will suit students who are intrigued by medical technology and laboratory diagnosis, and wish to perform scientific testing. The major builds on a general introduction to human biology, cell biology and molecular biology to cover a range of clinical laboratory disciplines including haematology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, histopathology and diagnostic genomics.

Students will obtain a broad knowledge of disease processes as well as technical skills in the handling of patient material, clinical testing and the analysis and troubleshooting of results. The major provides extensive exposure to the underlying principles involved in the measurement of clinical parameters.

Students successfully completing Clinical Laboratory Science as a double major with either Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology or Forensic Biology and Toxicology, can gain entry into a fourth year of study incorporating clinical practicum experiences leading to a full qualification in Laboratory Medicine (see Laboratory Medicine).

Learn within in a world class medical and health precinct

Our South Street campus is located within a world class medical and health precinct which includes two major hospitals, a veterinary hospital and two major medical research institutes all within walking distance.
