Jodie combined Asian Studies and Community Development in her undergraduate studies. Part of her degree included in-country study with the ACICIS program at Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She later worked as a volunteer in Indonesia through the Australian government’s VIDA program, focusing on ways to improve the participation of marginalised groups in development programs.

Her research interests cover participatory development, local governance and Indigenous health. She has worked for the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA (PHAIWA) on the Indigenous Smoking Initiatives project, which emphasises capacity building through advocacy and participatory research to reduce the prevalence of Indigenous tobacco use in Australia. After obtaining a first class honours degree in Sustainable Development and Asian Studies, Jodie Goodman began further studies toward a PhD in the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University, working on the Australian Research Council funded ‘social capital, natural resources and local governance in Indonesia’ project.

Jodie was a recipient of one of the inaugural 2010 Prime Minister's Australia Asia Endeavour Awards. The Award will provide funding for fieldwork toward a PhD on the changing dynamics of community development and local resource use in Eastern Indonesia. Jodie will also have the opportunity under the award to undertake an internship with the Australian government's ACCESS community development program in Indonesia.
