Asian Studies student profiles at Murdoch University

Darren's story

Darren studied Psychology and Japanese language at Murdoch, completing the Asian Studies Specialist - Japanese Studies major and winning a scholarship to study at university in Tokyo. He says, "My combination of Psychology and Japanese Studies was quite unorthodox, but I found it useful and stimulating to be able to learn in two entirely different areas concurrently. I think that students often do not know what exactly they want to do in future when they first enter university, but Murdoch's great flexibility of choice really opened doors for me."

Upon graduating, Darren worked as an intern at the Japanese Consulate General for a time before returning to Japan to work as a study-abroad counsellor at one of the most successful study-abroad firms in Japan. He now works as a translator for Canon, Honda and other large Japanese companies and plans to use this experience abroad towards building a career in international relations in the future.
