Introduction to Facilitated Learning

Program outcomes

At the end of the program, participants will:

  • Be able to explain the difference between lecturing and facilitation, and identify where each approach has its benefits and drawbacks;
  • Have access to an extensive range of activities that enable increased learner participation;
  • Have identified their own learning styles and understand the impact of that style on their approach to facilitated learning situations;
  • Have a clearer understanding of their own delivery style and be able to adapt that style to a facilitated learning environment;
  • Be able to structure a day of facilitated learning, and establish session plans and appropriate activities to support learning objectives;
  • Practice new skills by facilitating a short session of their choice and take home a video recording of that session.

Program content

  • Understanding the difference between lecturing and facilitation as content delivery options;
  • Appreciating the richness and history of adult learning and discussion of key conceptual models;
  • Exploring language and its power to enable learning and change when used effectively and with volition;
  • Recognising the skill set and essential characteristics of an effective facilitator;
  • Examining core facilitation skills, such as effective session structure, incorporating appropriate activities and the use of questioning skills to extract participant knowledge and increase learner participation.
