Introduction to Facilitated Learning
Program outcomes
At the end of the program, participants will:
- Be able to explain the difference between lecturing and facilitation, and identify where each approach has its benefits and drawbacks;
- Have access to an extensive range of activities that enable increased learner participation;
- Have identified their own learning styles and understand the impact of that style on their approach to facilitated learning situations;
- Have a clearer understanding of their own delivery style and be able to adapt that style to a facilitated learning environment;
- Be able to structure a day of facilitated learning, and establish session plans and appropriate activities to support learning objectives;
- Practice new skills by facilitating a short session of their choice and take home a video recording of that session.
Program content
- Understanding the difference between lecturing and facilitation as content delivery options;
- Appreciating the richness and history of adult learning and discussion of key conceptual models;
- Exploring language and its power to enable learning and change when used effectively and with volition;
- Recognising the skill set and essential characteristics of an effective facilitator;
- Examining core facilitation skills, such as effective session structure, incorporating appropriate activities and the use of questioning skills to extract participant knowledge and increase learner participation.
