Finance for Non Finance Managers

Program outcomes

The two-day ‘Finance for Managers’ Program has been designed to build practical financial literacy in the management ranks and enable participants to understand better the language of business finance with a view to contributing to more healthy and robust debates on all aspects of business performance and improvement. Accordingly, the program will empower participants to:

  • Analyse and understand financial performance metrics
  • Discuss and communicate financial concepts
  • Apply financial analysis to daily operations, and
  • Implement appropriate methods for improving ‘bottom line’ performance and improving financial outcomes.

Fundamentally, the Program will demonstrate ways that mangers can create and build value within their areas of operation or strategic business unit by seeking to: improve profitability, control working capital requirements, and build demonstrable worth.

Program content

The program provides basic grounding in the key aspects of financial management and control using expert input, case studies and skills practice. Key themes covered include:

  • Understanding the financial basics, and the inter-relationship between the main financial instruments
  • Appreciating the important financial ‘drivers and tools’ that influence business performance
  • Using financial information for planning, business improvement and decision-making purposes
  • Analysing operations with a view to improving financial performance and return on investment
  • Reviewing and evaluating diverse methods for improving profitability
  • Understanding and building a strong Balance Sheet
  • Identifying true working capital requirements; and managing cash-flow effectively
  • Appreciating key factors in making investment decisions to create value.

The program will be highly interactive with ample opportunity for participant involvement. Real-life case studies will be used to demonstrate the relationship between the various financial metrics and to illustrate the impact of various performance improvement strategies.
