Professor Garry Rodan- Political analyst
Reading the tea leaves of Asian politics
Making sense of Asian politics has made Murdoch’s Asia Research Centre a leading international authority on the region’s social, political and economic dynamics.
Under the leadership of Professor Garry Rodan, the ARC produces innovative research, high quality students and provides insightful commentary for some of the world’s most influential media.
“The Asia Research Centre has established itself over more than a decade as an international leader in the study of East and Southeast Asia,” Professor Rodan said.
“Its objectives are to produce high quality academic research publications for international and domestic audiences; foster the development of high quality research graduates; and to constructively contribute to public policy debate and public understanding on issues concerning contemporary Asia.”
“To stimulate innovative, quality research into the politics and economies of Asia.”
In-depth research
Professor Rodan has written extensively on Singapore’s political and economic development and more generally on democratisation and its problems in Asia. His recent research includes examination of the political economy of the international media in various parts of East and Southeast Asia, the political impact of the internet and, in his latest authored book Transparency and Authoritarian Rule in Southeast Asia, the political implications of transparency reform in the region.
Another of Professor Rodan’s books, The Political Economy of Singapore’s Industrialization, challenges prevailing explanations for Singapore’s rapid economic growth, and quickly became the definitive account of how policy initiatives shaped economic prosperity in the city-state.
