Are you eligible for a university scholarship?

Girl jumping excitedly

Receiving a university scholarship is a welcome addition to any study journey. For many, it may even be a life-changing opportunity. Read on to see if you’re eligible for a Murdoch scholarship.

Do you know what the biggest scholarship myth is? You’re probably thinking it right now.

If you’re like most people, you probably assume scholarships are predominantly for high achievers. Well, we are here to set the record straight. While those with good grades certainly do have scholarships open to them because of their academic performance, there are countless other grants available. In fact, did you know more than $2.5 million is awarded to Murdoch University recipients each year? And you could be one of them!

First, let’s do the world’s shortest quiz. Who of the following do you think would be eligible for a scholarship?

  • A tech undergrad keen to make a positive difference in the world
  • A rural high achiever relocating to campus
  • A freshly graduated high schooler living 90 minutes away
  • A TAFE graduate furthering their studies at uni
  • A graduating Year 12 student, who by their leadership and activity has effected positive change in their School/community
  • An undergraduate or postgraduate student experiencing hardship
  • A full-time international student
  • A Murdoch Alumnus returning to Murdoch to study a postgraduate degree

Answer? All of them!

Scholarships are an opportunity

At Murdoch we firmly believe everyone should have the chance to further themselves, and scholarships are a part of this vision.

Every year, students from all walks of life receive generous financial support to assist in easing bumps in the road so they can concentrate on academic life, and make the most of their university experience. That assistance might help with rent, transportation, living expenses, uni fees, childcare, research costs, and more.

A closer look at Murdoch University scholarships

Let’s take a peek at some of the scholarships on offer (hint – these ones were mentioned above in our mini quiz).

The Ngala Kwop Biddi Brighter Futures Scholarship aligns with the Murdoch’s commitment to building a brighter future, which is why each Western Australian Secondary School is given the opportunity to nominate a Year 12 students, who by their leadership and activity has effected positive change in their School/community, related to one of our three strategic themes - Sustainability; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and First Nations.

If you’re eager to make the world a better place with technology, there’s the Westpac Young Technologists Scholarship that grants $15,000 to passionate students starting a range of degrees. Or maybe you’ve completed a TAFE course and want to continue your education at university. In this case, you might be suitable for the $3,000 TAFE WA Rewards.

Distance should not be a barrier to education. If you find yourself in this camp, there’s a $24,000 George Alexander Foundation Scholarship to assist rural and regional students reach their full potential. If you live further from Perth but perhaps not quite rural (although this one is open to those students too), you might be eligible for the $5,000 Tertiary Access Payment to help with costs like travelling.

It can be hard to focus on study when you’re going through difficulties. If you’ve enrolled to start the first year of your undergraduate degree but you’re experiencing personal or financial hardship, you might like to look into the $12,000 or $16,000 Ragdoll Scholarship. Check out Keisha’s story and her experience with the Ragdoll Scholarship. And if you’re not eligible for that, it’s worth considering the one-year Murdoch Senate Bursary.
